Abstract
The surgical treatment of carcinoma of the head and neck area often requires extensive resections necessitating large flaps for reconstruction.

In recent years there has been more acceptance of immediate repairs following the removal of these large cancers.

The reconstion of large defects from reseetion of tumors in the head and neck area has been facilitated by the development of myocutaneous flaps -- particularly the new pectoralis major myocutaneous flap which per mits immediate reconstruction.

Although other myocutaneous flaps can be transferred successfully without delay into these defects, each has certain shortcomings.

Advantages of the pectoralis major myocutaneous flap are the technical ease of raising and transferring it, the reliability and versatility of the flap, the viability of the skin paddle is readily apparent during the procedures, ling arc of rotation, and the flap can be transferred immediately, without a delay.

In our experience with 2 pectoralis major myocutaneous flaps, they have been very reliable for reconstruction of defects from extensive cancer resections in head and neck.
